HEADLINE: For the Republicans in the 19th CD: “And then there was one”
At the monthly meeting of the Northeast Queens Republican Club Wednesday night, Joseph Gravagna graciously bowed out of the race for City Council uniting the Republican Party behind its endorsed candidate, Dan Halloran for the 19th Councilmanic District. The district is comprised of College Point, Auburndale, Whitestone, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Douglaston and Little Neck. In his statement to the club, Gravagna opined that Halloran was, “the ideal candidate who represents the very best in our Party”. He went on to praise the Party’s candidate as a man of great accomplishments personally and professionally, and reminded everyone that the Halloran family’s roots in the Flushing area stretch back over a century making him uniquely equipped to address the issues of our community.
Joined by the County party’s leadership including, Chairman Phil Ragusa, executive vice chair, Vince Tabone, and other Republican party officers, Janet Malone presided over the meeting of the club last night, which heard from Eric Ulrich, newly elected City Councilman for southern Queens, and Robert Bishop, GOP attorney and counsel for the District. Robert Hornak, the party’s candidate for Queen Borough President also addressed the club, as did Queens Village Club president, Phil Sica and Bart Haggerty of the Forest Park Republican Club.
Halloran thanked all of the potential candidates and particularly Gravagna, as well as the Party leadership for their support. He then focused on his campaign’s core issues of efficient and transparent government, attention to the outer-boroughs, taxes, and quality of life issues that speak to the heart of his district. “Northeast Queens is unlike anywhere else in the City, we are ethnically and culturally diverse, a mixture of urban and suburban homes, and the driving force in the economy of our City, yet our voice is seldom heard by the City Council, and even less so by the State Assembly”. He went on to note the recent proposals to create bridge tolls were yet another example of dividing the city’s residents and called upon the Council to eliminate the “temporary” property tax increases which fall disproportionately on the homeowners in the 19th.
