CANDIDATES GATHER AT EAST FLUSHING and OUR FLUSHING CIVICS
EVEN DEMS CONCEDE HALLORAN WINS DEBATE

The 19th City Council District Candidates gathered at two debates last month, at St. Andrew Avellino R.C., the East-Flushing Civic Association Candidates Debate, and the “Our Flushing Political Coalition” candidates night at the Flushing Reception House. The events were the first two candidate debates for the full field of candidates. GOP candidate Dan Halloran squared off against his 7 democratic opponents on his “home ground” as Halloran grew up in St. Andrew’s; the Reception House is around the corner from his childhood home. The candidates were given an opportunity to respond to the questions posed by moderator, James Bena, on behalf of the civic associations, which are headed by Janet Malone and Terence Park respectively.

Halloran dominated the debates with a command of the issues that far surpassed his opponents in both form and substance. The moderator of the debate, a registered democrat and on the campaign staff of one of the democratic candidates conceded Halloran won the debates after the completion of the East-Flushing Civic event, in a public writing on Facebook:

Halloran who is a lifelong member of the community hammered home the need for fiscal accountability in the City Council, “We must act now to prevent the tax and spend attitude of our city Council from destroying the economic engine of New York City. Our small businesses and homeowners are collapsing under the weight of an unprecedented barrage of taxes.” He also touted his community credentials, from his early years as an Eagle Scout, to working for the NYPD, the District Attorney’s Office, and on to private practice as an Attorney.

Halloran is the sole Republican Candidate, and will face the winner of the Democratic Primary. He is also seeking the endorsement of the Conservative and Independence parties.
